Business Accountant: Why Your Values Are One of the Most Practical Business Tools You Have

Values can sound like fluffy territory for a business owner. Mission statements on walls. Workshop outputs that get filed away and forgotten.

I used to think the same. When the team is small, you don’t need much of a framework – everyone’s in the same room, culture is implicit, and alignment happens naturally.

But something shifts as you grow.

“Previously, core values hadn’t been a focus due to team size. Growth and complexity require shared standards to maintain teamwork and quality.”

We went through a facilitated workshop recently to define our mission, vision, and core values – and more importantly, to translate them into specific behaviours. What does this value actually look like in practice? What does it look like when it’s missing?

What surprised me was how useful it became almost immediately. Not in a philosophical sense, but in a very practical one.

When someone on the team isn’t performing the way you’d like, it’s easy for that conversation to feel personal and emotional. Values give you a reference point. Instead of saying ‘I feel like you’re not pulling your weight,’ you can point to something specific: ‘Here’s the behaviour we agreed on, and here’s where we’re seeing a gap.’

“This framework helps set standards and manage behaviour consistently across the team. It also reduces emotional conflicts by using shared values as reference points.”

The other place this pays dividends is hiring. When you’re interviewing someone, you’re usually trying to figure out if they’ll fit. Values make that question concrete. You can share them up front and watch how a candidate responds. The people who light up when they hear them are usually the people you want.

If you haven’t done this work yet, I’d encourage you to. It doesn’t have to be a big production. Even a half-day workshop with your team to define three or four values – and the behaviours they represent – can change how you manage, hire, and operate.

It’s one of those things that feels like a slow investment until suddenly it isn’t.
