Business Accountant: Why Doing One Thing Beats Doing Everything

Something I see a lot with business owners right now is overwhelm – and not the kind that comes from a bad business. It comes from too many options.

I was speaking with a client recently who’d been consuming advice from three different coaches, testing half a dozen AI tools, and reading everything they could get their hands on about how to grow their business. They were busy. Genuinely busy. But nothing was getting done.

“The confusion from using too many AI tools and conflicting advice caused more harm than good. They were spending time exploring options instead of completing critical tasks.”

What it showed me was that information, on its own, doesn’t move a business forward. Execution does.

There’s a mindset I’ve come back to many times working with business owners, and it’s this: pick one task. Not the most exciting task. Not the task you’ve been avoiding for three months. Just the next important thing – and finish it.

One of the best examples I can point to is Jamie Johns. What sets Jamie apart isn’t that he’s working on ten things at once. It’s that he executes consistently. He makes a decision, he sees it through, and he learns from it. That’s the whole system.

“Completing one task, even if imperfect, is better than juggling many incomplete projects. Executing allows learning from mistakes and refining future decisions.”

The other thing worth saying: you don’t have to get it right the first time. In fact, I’d argue that waiting until you’re certain is the thing that keeps most business owners stuck. An imperfect decision you’ve acted on is worth far more than a perfect plan sitting in a notebook.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the moment, I’d encourage you to do something simple. Write down everything you think needs to happen. Then ask yourself: if I could only do one of these this week, which one would actually move the needle?

Do that one. Then come back and repeat the process.

It sounds almost too simple. But in my experience, it’s the business owners who master this who tend to grow the fastest.
