As a SME business, have you thought about your business’ impact on the environment?

There are a lot of reasons to do so. Firstly, being sustainable may lower your cost and boost your profitability! Resources cost you money, so it helps your bottom line if you use less of them. According to studies, sustainability shows better financial performance in businesses as well.

Another good reason to be sustainable is customers, investors, and staff will more likely choose you! People care about the societal impact of the businesses they engage with – and it’s important to have environmental sustainability values and targets.

Xero’s Partner in Fighting Climate Change

We support Xero’s environmental sustainability objectives to reduce electricity consumption, reduce waste, and encourage recycling in buildingsXero aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging alternative transport for employees and increasing teleconference meetings as well. The company also supports environmental projects in New Zealand, Indonesia, and India. Because of these efforts, Xero was certified carbon neutral by the Australian Government’s Climate Active program.

At Outside, we pledge to remain mindful of our impact on the environment. Like many businesses, we still have more to do, but we’ve started looking at consumer insights and exploring actions we can take to address specific environmental issues. We use our tools and equipment more efficiently in the office and where possible, switch to energy-efficient alternatives. Our team reuse stationery and have gone mostly paperless as well.

Being sustainable doesn’t have to be expensive or hard and starting small will still make a surprising difference. You need to set goals and monitor your progress. Make this a part of your company culture by offering incentives or competitions among your employees.

You can reduce your energy use or switch to energy-efficient alternatives and renewable forms like solar or wind. If you can reuse stationery, go paperless or use recycled paper and ink cartridges. You can go the extra mile and provide bins for recycling in the office and contact your local scrap recycler to collect your office and employees’ old hardware from home. In your pantry, you can provide real kitchenware to reduce disposable container,
cup, plate, and utensil use. There are also quite a few green office cleaning product options too, such as Eco Planet. You can gift reusables such as reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and shopping bags to employees and clients.

Outside the office, you can support environmental causes and adopt a green cause or do an annual fundraising event or volunteering day. If you can, choose eco-friendly vendors and check if your suppliers are complying with pollution and waste laws and regulations. Spreading the word to your clients and to other local businesses will also make a difference!

If you wanna have a chat about it, flick us a message and we’ll get back to you right away. Remember that sustainability is now a standard business principle and becoming a more sustainable business will demonstrate your leadership and commitment to a safe and healthy future for all.
